Beauty From The Ground Up

with Weavers Art

By Adrienne Roman

Michael Pourvakil, owner of Weavers Art, knows design. “Art is an extension of your personality and lifestyle,” Pourvakil says. His design house features a stunning collection of natural fibre hand-knotted luxury silk and wool rugs suited for all spaces. From traditional Persian rugs to modern styles created with advanced digital technologies, and everything in between, Weavers Art rugs define quality and are the perfect elegant addition to any room.

Collaborating with Canadian design talent, or travelling the world to locate the finest fibre artists, Pourvakil has been sourcing unique and innovative pieces for his elegant showrooms since the 1980s. He draws much of his inspiration from nature, architecture, and an array of various fabrics. Floor coverings are historically held in high respect in his homeland of Iran, designated as a cultural art form in itself, and Pourvakil understands the significance of helping his clients create beautiful spaces that start from the ground up.

Weavers Art features a number of exclusive rugs made by award-winning Turkish designer Erbil Tezcan.

While a typical rug might produce 10,000 knots per square foot and use three, five, or even seven different colours, Tezcan’s one-of-a-kind creations are 22,500 knots and have

as many as forty-nine colours. In the world of carpets this innovation is a legendary achievement.

Tezcan’s “New York” is a super fine rug, crafted with the finest Chinese silk and pure Tibetan wool, inspired by Manhattan’s nightscape from across

the Hudson River.

His colourful “After Hours” collection sets itself apart from the rest with a symphony of bold graffiti-style strokes, complemented by brisk movements and shapes. Its title hints at the mysteries discovered after dark, a time when street artists and musicians paint and play with wild abandon. As a classical guitarist himself, many of Tezcan’s playful works reference New York City’s music, neighbourhoods, and echo the simple art of enjoying life to the fullest.

Find Your Signature Style

Signature: find geometric designs and a mix of selections fit for any décor

Contemporary: textured options and neutral tones

Modern Art: modern abstract choices and an array of colours and textures

Madison Collection: Belgium made and woven in 100% cotton chenille

Park Avenue: Impressionist and ethereal colour palettes

Aubusson: French-inspired area rugs with royal reds and rich blues

Transitional Persian Rugs: both bold and subdued Persian patterns, Damask and Spanish prints

Erbil Tezcan Collection: inspired by life, an extensive collection

Christopher Guy Collection: Art Deco luxury and stylish modern canvases

Pourvakil is seeing current trends moving away from neutral-toned canvases towards rugs with gold, copper, and black accents.

Creating a balanced environment ensures all design elements in a room fit together to create harmony. Furniture placement can present a challenge with the geometric shapes, florals, and centre medallions that are found in traditional Persian carpets. “I’m seeing more clients choosing carpets with less colours, textures, and patterns,” Pourvakil says.

Weavers Art has provided the perfect solution with their Transitional Persian Rugs, like Ziegler 200A, keeping a classical feel and based on historical patterns, but modified to complement today’s contemporary décor. There’s also a number of computer-generated designs available, which are often less expensive yet equally as attractive.

Weaver’s Art supports the community with proceeds donated to a number of charitable organizations, including Children’s Aid Foundation. Pourvakil has also worked closely with the next generation of designers, artists from Ontario College of Art and Design’s Material Art and Design program (MAAD). Student creations were sent to Nepal and India to translate the images into working patterns. Each square of a hand-painted graph represented one knot in the final carpet, which can often exceed 500,000 knots. Top student designs were exhibited in the showroom, giving them a chance to experience all aspects of production in the retail market.

Whether it’s consultations, rentals, cleaning and restoration, or finding that perfect match, Weavers Art works with their diverse clientele to provide exceptional service.

Known for their strong and fast turnaround, in-house design teams and international weavers design, manufacture, and deliver works of art suited to all lifestyles.

Versatility and creativity are important factors in the rug business, having an innate sense of how all the elements work together to create an ideal aesthetic. Michael Pourvakil has mastered his craft and views design as a global instrument to build relationships, drawing inspiration from the many creative ideas designers bring to the table. He’s been providing a wide range of superior products for over thirty years, and his clientele can’t say enough about the attentive, knowledgeable support they receive, from the initial selection to the
